A Guide To Men’s Skin Types
Just like a blood type, we’re each born with a unique skin type. Given our genetic make-up, that skin type can present itself differently in men than it does in our female counterparts. What’s more is that the signs of a certain skin type can be misleading. Oily skin, for example, can be dehydrated, while the use of the wrong product can be mistaken for sensitive skin. In analysing your skin type, you are able to make an informed choice when it comes to the cleansers, moisturisers and other products you use on your face.

Oily skin

Just as it sounds, oily skin often develops a sheen soon after washing your face and can also be recognised by enlarged pores and a constant build-up of dirt, resulting in blackheads and breakouts.
The greatest mistake that men with oily skin make is that they tend to cut back on moisturising, but oily skin can also be dehydrated, which causes the glands to produce more oil as a form of compensation. Dehydrated skin tends to feel tight on the face, whereas dry skin is flaky and red to the touch.
Regular exfoliation helps to unclog the pores, while a face mask will help to dissolve the excess sebum that causes a sheen on the skin. A lightweight cosmeceutical moisturiser or serum will maintain the skin’s hydration without the waxy texture.

Dry skin

Itchy, red, flaky and tight skin is often an indication that you have a dry skin type. When inflamed or irritated by the wind, indoor heating and sun exposure, dry skin can be particularly sore.
Men with dry skin should avoid any products that are particularly stripping or strong. Opt instead for a gentle foaming or creamy cleanser and moisture-rich moisturisers and hydrating serums. A rich night cream will help to repair and hydrate skin overnight.

Normal skin

Some people are naturally gifted with even skin that’s neither dry and flaky or oily and shiny. While hydration remains important, most well-made products will be suitable for your skin.
Follow a standard routine of cleansing, exfoliating, moisturising and sun protection and invest in regular facials to keep pores clear and the skin free of blemishes.

Combination skin

It might be that your T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) are oily, with blocked pores that result in blackheads, and yet your cheeks are dry and tight. This is best described as combination skin and is quite common amongst men.
Exfoliating the T-zone to help decrease oil production will help to balance out your skin. A light moisturiser or hydrating serum will help to provide balanced care across your face.

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin tends to be quite rare, particularly in men, so irritated or blotchy skin is more often the result of a reaction to a certain product.
Investing in high-quality cosmeceutical skincare products means using natural or scientifically-formulated ingredients on your face, avoiding the parabens often found in cheaper, over-the-counter products.
Try calming face washes and moisturisers which are free of fragrances and chemicals.
